FACES OF PACT
Newsletter of Parents And Children Together
SPRING 2005
Parents And Children Together has grown so much over the last few years, and as we’ve evolved, so has the “face” of PACT. Over the past few months, you’ve seen our brochures change to better represent our programs and reflect the “soul” of the organization. “Faces of PACT”, like our brochures, represents a renewed effort to showcase the work PACT does for and with our community and its members.

What you can look forward to is a more informative and fun-to-read newsletter. One which will keep all our loyal readers up-to-date on all the latest PACT developments – and give us a chance to brag a little about our extraordinary organization!

Above all, “Faces of PACT” is an acknowledgement that PACT is made up of many people working together in partnership on a multitude of projects and programs for a common goal- to make the communities of Hawaii a better place for us all.

Featured in this premier issue is the cover artwork for two of PACT’s program brochures. The Intensive Support Services Program provides services to children who have social, emotional and/or behavioral issues and may also have physical, and/or mental disabilities that interfere with their ability to engage in family life and school based learning. PACT has provided these services to families on Oahu as well as Maui County since 2000. In 2004, we opened a program office on Kauai.

Our Community Teen Program provides a variety of activities for youth ages 7-18 who live in and around Kuhio Park Terrace and Kuhio Homes. These activities promote the development of healthy youth, families and communities by providing an abundance of positive experiences that promote leadership development.

And yes, those are her actual report card grades! (3) A’s, (1) B and perfect attendance. Way to go Evelynn!

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Parents And Children Together has received full reaccredidation from the Council on Accreditation (COA) for four additional years. COA is an international, independent, not-for-profit, child-and family-service and behavioral healthcare accrediting organization which promotes organization compliance with the highest standards available. COA accreditation is widely recognized by states and national organizations as an accrediting body with the capacity, scope, and ability to contribute significantly to the improvement of the human service field.

PACT recently underwent an in-depth process to achieve reaccredidation including a 6 day site visit. PACT was evaluated on hundreds of agency wide and program specific service standards and rated on a scale of 1 to 4; 1 - Full Compliance, 2 - Substantial Compliance, 3 - Partial Compliance, and 4 - Non-Compliance.

In all of the General and Service standards, we received an overall score of 1 in each category. Again, this is the highest score achievable. This is a wonderful outcome for us and demonstrates our staff’s and Board of Directors’ commitment to excellence at all levels. It is a reflection of teamwork and quality leadership throughout the organization.

The COA Review Team applauded PACT for the quality of our services and commitment of PACT’s staff. Some of the comments presented in the exit review were:

• Staff were committed, qualified and lived the mission of PACT;
• Staff approach consumers using a strength based model;
• Excellent fiscal and human resource oversight;
• PACT is an absolute wonderful model of a community based agency – something that many agencies have tried to do and few have been able to achieve;
• PACT staff truly lives diversity;
• Excellent Strategic Plan and follow-up;
• Strong agency leadership that allows participation at all levels of the organization;
• PACT’s stakeholders are very complimentary of PACT and want to partner with you; and
• PACT is a classic model of an agency dealing with rapid growth in an appropriate way on all levels of the organization.

Our reaccredidation letter stated: “COA’s program of quality improvement is designed to identify providers that have set high performance standards for themselves and have made a commitment to their constituents to deliver the very best quality services. COA is proud to recognize PACT as one of these outstanding providers.”

Every one at every level of the organization – from the Vice Presidents to the bus drivers—did a wonderful job of projecting their commitment to their consumers and to the agency. Congratulations to everyone at PACT including the Board of Directors and our community partners. Mahalo for taking pride in your work and for helping us achieve this great success.

PACT welcomes the following three new directors:
Division
Director of Treatment:
Vicky Wallach
Maui
Program Director:
Abdel Mebed
Family Centers
Program Director:
Christina Simmons
Christina Simmons takes over from Helenann Lauber, who after 13 years with PACT has retired. Helenann is the first Program Director to retire from PACT, and leaves behind a legacy of achievement with PACT.

In 1991 Helenann became the first Program Director of the newly established KPT Family Center. In that same year she established the first Community Celebration, which today is one of the largest, most attended events in the community.

Under Helenann’s leadership the Family Center has seen a series of “firsts”: 1995-the merger of the Kaneohe Community Family Center with PACT’s KPT Family Center. 1999-birth of the first Parental Information Resource Centers on Oahu, Molokai, Kauai and the Big Island. 2000-Start of the Family Literacy Project in KPT and Kaneohe. 2001-Start of the Technology Center at KPT. 2001-First Drug Elimination Program in KPT and the first Healthy Hawaii Initiative. 2002 Start of the first Neighborhood Place in KPT.

Hundreds of community leaders, KPT residents and PACT friends gathered to thank Helenann and wish her and husband, Irv Lauber (past President of Aloha United Way), all the best at her Aloha Party in November.

Helenann, we will all miss you and wish you and Irv all the best in your retirement years.

3 year old Head Start participant, member of Ms. Jojo’s class, and Lion Dancer helped ring in the Chinese New Year when he danced at our KPT office. Classmates helped out with loud “pop…pop…pop” sounds as they imitated firecrackers!
The PACAF XP Booster Club of Hickam Air Force Base collected 215 toys and raised $855 for the families served by the Hana Like Home Visitor Program. In appreciation, the staff and families of Hana Like created a quilted wall hanging with thank-yous in English, Hawaiian, Samoan, and Chukkese. Pictured are Kathryn Hunter, Program Director of Hana Like Home Visitor, Program and Brigadier General Glenn F. Spears.
PACT’s Ohia Shelter was selected as one of Kamehameha School’s honorees, recognized for their work in the community. In celebration of their services, Vice President Raynard Soon and his staff of the Community Relations and Communication Division, presented Nandi Ishikawa, Ohia’s Shelter’s Program Director, four handmade Kapa quilts. Community Relations and Communication Division staffers gave two weeks of their time to sew each quilt with much Aloha. Pictured are Nandi Ishikawa with staff from Ohia Shelter and Raynard Soon with staff from Kamehameha. On Christmas morning each resident was presented with their own Kapa quilt and other gifts donated by the community.
Compadres Bar & Grill General Manager and PACT Board member, John Langan, presenting a check of $750 --which they collected from their participation in the Honolulu Marathon—to our teens. To be used for developing youth/adult partnerships at Kuhio Park Terrace. Compadres Bar & Grill is a loyal and long-time supporter of PACT. Please show your appreciation by patronizing this wonderful eatery!
Kids day coming up:
Extra…Extra…Read all about it!….
Kids Day 2004 & 2005 Honorary Chair and Chairman & CEO of Bank of Hawaii, Mr. Al Landon, and the 2004 Kids Day contest winners.
Kids Day is Parents And Children Together’s annual fund raising event, and 2005 will mark the 12th anniversary of our partnership with The Honolulu Advertiser, Oahu public and private schools, and hundreds of volunteers who sell the special edition of the paper on the streets.

On Wednesday May 4, The Honolulu Advertiser will publish a special Kids Day edition, featuring the student winners of our Kids Day Creativity Contest. Oahu students will submit their original writing or artwork on the theme, “Who Am I?” The contest deadline for entries will be March 18, 2005.

Last year over 32,000 copies of the Special Edition Kids day newspaper were sold. Many local celebrities (including Governor Lingle, UH Coaches, Miss Hawaii, Miss Honolulu, TV anchors, and Radio personalities) turned out to sell newspapers alongside our hundreds of volunteers all over Oahu.

PACT is also seeking patrons to purchase newspapers for students at $1 per copy. The sponsor may designate which school will benefit from their donation. Last year over 10,000 papers were sponsored and delivered to hundreds of classrooms all over Oahu.

Proceeds from all Kids Day newspaper sales will benefit Parents And Children Together (PACT).

Starlight & Slippahs…
Our Starlight & Slippahs event on November 6th was a resounding success. More than 300 guests enjoyed wonderful food, entertainment, a silent auction, and a starry (though occasionally rainy!) night.

This was our most successful Starlight & Slippahs event to-date. More than $60,000.00 was raised to benefit our Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Programs!

A special mahalo goes out to all the restaurant and beverage sponsors who helped make Starlight & Slippahs so ono!

These include:
Auntie Pasto’s, Carval Catering, Compadres Bar & Grill , Grand Café & Bakery, Hard Rock Café, Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hawaii, Murphy’s Bar & Grill, Nick’s Fishmarket, Allied Domecq, Anheuser Busch Co., L & L Brokerage, Paradise Beverage, Pepsi Cola Hawaii, and Starbucks…

There is no way an event of this scope could be successful without a long list of sponsors and volunteers. Starlight & Slippahs was no exception. Please visit the “events” page on our new website at www.pacthawaii.org for more photos and a complete listing of all the PACT angels!
