PACT hosts visitors from around the nation – Ohia Shelter Benefits
SPRING 2006
Last month several national foundations toured PACT facilities and programs. They all came away impressed and with a greater understanding of our famous Aloha Spirit!

The funding that PACT receives from foundations such as these allows us to provide essential services to our consumers. For example, The Harold K. L. Castle Foundation provided our Ohia Shelter with $360,000.00 which was used in the purchase of our new home on the Windward side. Thanks to the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation the Shelter now has a permanent home and no longer has to worry about renting.

The new Ohia Shelter will provide a safe and stable environment for victims of DV who can now devote their energies toward rebuilding their lives.

The Ohia Shelter is also benefiting from your contributions. Donations allowed us to launch a children’s program and to build a children’s library at the Shelter. We mustn’t forget that the children of these families are victims of domestic violence too. While they may not suffer from physical violence perse, they are often witnesses of domestic abuse and need help as well.

Next on the ‘wish list’ for the Ohia Shelter is building a ‘soft’ playground area for the Shelter keiki. If you are able to help, please allocate your donation to PACT’s “Safe Play” project.

An ongoing feature of the ‘Faces of PACT’ newsletter is our showcase of the new cover artwork from two of PACT’s program brochures. This time we are highlighting our Early Head Start/Head Start program and the Respite Care program.

The Early Head Start and Head Start Program are part of a federally funded initiative for low-income parents and their children that provide early childhood education, health, special needs and other comprehensive services. Early Head Start provides services in centers and in-home to prenatal parents and parents with infants and toddlers. Head Start serves children age three to five and their parents to provide a head start for school success.

Respite Care provides a much needed break from child care responsibilities for parents who are under stress and cannot afford childcare. Trained childcare providers and volunteers care for children under six years of age, and assist parents with literacy activities and parenting skills.

Wade Horn, the Assistant Secretary of the Federal Department of Health and Human Services, visited our Early Head Start classrooms in February, shortly thereafter Senators Akaka and Dodd visited as well.

It was an honor to host these dignitaries, but their interest in our programs come as no surprise to us. Over the past few years PACT has become the largest infant/toddler provider in the State of Hawaii, and our classrooms have become an example to others.

Early Head Start showcases a number of innovative programs including a lending library where books are being translated into Chuukese and Marshalese, a “Father Involvement” program to increase family participation in their children’s education and care, and a Family Literacy Program.

Our Early Head Start/Head Start program is dedicated to making our services available to more infants and toddlers, recognizing the importance of early care, and has opened more classrooms throughout the island including our newest in Pearl City and Waimanalo.

But it’s not all good news… nationwide funding for this vital program is being questioned by the Federal Government. If we believe in equal opportunities for all children – regardless of race or income, we simply cannot afford to lose this early childhood education program. We urge all of you to let our representatives in Washington know that this program is vital to our youth and to the future of America.

Family Strengthening Month

The Lt. Governor proclaimed March to be Family Strengthening month, and PACT’s Community Teen Program, Family Centers and our Hawaii Coalition for Dads were recognized for their exemplary work at the proclamation ceremony on March 9. We heartily agree with Lt. Governor Aiona that Family is where it all begins. Our mission at PACT is to nurture and guide families to make a better life for them and all of Hawaii. We are dedicated to making a difference -- one family at a time!

Volunteers make a difference

Speking of “family,” over 50 volunteers from the Bank of Hawaii Ohana sacrificed their Saturday to beautify our Teen Center and EHS/HS classrooms. PACT was chosen as the first organization to benefit from a newly created BOH staff community service program. The difference is astounding and the results of all their hard work will be enjoyed for a long time! The Teen space is now bright yellow and blue and the classrooms sparkle. One of the teens said it all, “Wow, this looks like a home now!”
Gifts of Aloha

The “Gifts of Aloha” event at Details Gallery was a tremendous success. The gallery brought together artwork from a number of their feature artists and created a special display. Their work was on display for two weeks and put up for auction on December 16 in a fundraiser for PACT.
The occasion was one to remember. Beautiful artwork in an elegant setting – and all for a great cause!
We felt very special to have been the first beneficiaries of something that is bound to become the “must see” art sale of the year!

Teens “Lost”

Our teens from the Community Teen Center were able to visit the cast of “Lost” while they were shooting a spread for “Entertainment Weekly” magazine. The youngsters enjoyed an outing at the Lanai Lookout, and got a glimpse of behind-the-scenes showbiz life. Most exciting for the teens was getting to meet and talk with the stars of the show. Mahalo to these busy celebrities for taking the time to make it such a special occasion for our teens!

Women’s Hui adopting rooms at shelter

A Women's Hui "Friends of the Shelter" has taken it upon themselves to beautify our Shelter bedrooms. Each room received new bedding comforters, rugs, window coverings, chairs and other special touches -- each in a special theme and color. They have adopted, and will maintain each room for the remainder of the year. The personal touch was a beautiful gesture of generosity. “Providing shelter and help to these women and their children is our priority. It is so heartwarming to have these wonderful ladies realize that being in a warm and inviting environment is important too and not something that we as an agency have the means to spend a lot of money on.” said Ruthann Quitiquit, President & CEO of PACT.
All eyes on “ProjectFocus”

After our successful Project Focus photo exhibit at Marks Garage, the teens from our Community Teen Program bumped into Mayor Hannemann and his wife. After seeing the exhibit, the Mayor was so impressed with what our kids had achieved that he insisted on moving the entire exhibit to Honolulu Hale after the show’s close at Marks Garage! A special opening reception was hosted by the Mayor. The ProjectFocus exhibitions showcased the talents of these gifted kids, and more importantly, the hope and potential they all see for our future! These kids know that they have a lot to offer and despite living in government housing, or “the Ghetto” as one of them pointed out during her speech, they fully realize that they are no less gifted or have less to offer.

The national website, “Amazing Kids“ highlights talented children across America – and this month they’re recognizing our ProjectFocus teens! Please visit their website at www.amazingkids.com

Kids Day
Al Landon, Chairman & CEO of Bank of Hawaii and our Kids day Chair together with our Kids Day contest winners
Mahalo to all the volunteers, sponsors and supporters for being such an important part of Kids Day 2006! All of us at Parents And Children Together truly appreciate your help in promoting the event and being out there in the trenches with us!. Your contribution was instrumental in making Kids day 2006 such an overwhelming success!

This year close to 1,000 volunteers donated their time to PACT by selling newspapers, on Kids Day! Local celebrities from TV and radio, the coaching staff from the UH, the Mayor and Governor, even entire offices, turned out to help raise an astounding $54,000 to support the thirteen family-service programs PACT operates in Hawaii.

We are grateful to our major sponsors Bank of Hawaii (special Kids Day insert and prize sponsor) and AIG (Kids Day aprons) who contributed over $10,000 in sponsorships.
