Puuhonua is a one-stop drop-in center for victims of domestic violence, providing crisis intervention and counseling, legal services, advocacy, education, and childcare. The program is a collaborative effort with the Honolulu Police Department. Services are provided at Puuhonua’s Honolulu office, and at various locations throughout Oahu.
P U’UHONUA- THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DROP-IN CENTER
Pu’uhonua, “a place of peace and safety,” is a collaboration between Parents and Children Together (PACT)and the Honolulu Police Department (HPD). The Center provides victims of domestic violence and their children with comprehensive services at a single location


The following services are available to anyone who needs them:



CRISIS COUNSELING/RESPONSE


Trained counselors are available to provide immediate counseling and support to victims of domestic violence. Community advocacy, resources, safety planning and education on the dynamics of domestic violence is also provided. Counselors provide rooms or other public locations to meet with victims.

EVIDENCE COLLECTION

Staff have been trained by HPD detectives in the use of a Polaroid Spectra Camera to collect pictures of a victim’s injuries. The pictures taken by staff may be used as evidence in order to assist in the prosecution of the perpetrator.

LIFELINE

In collaboration with various cellular providers, Pu’uhonua provides cellular telephones that are pre-programmed to access 911 to victims of domestic violence.

OUTREACH

Pu’uhonua staff facilitate outreach to those victims who are unable to come to the Center for services. Counselors also work closely with hospitals and Emergency Rooms and are available to meet with victims in any safe location.

CHILD CARE

Staff provide free child care on a pre-arranged basis. Victims who need to attend court hearings or meet with their attorney can utilize these services. Child care is also provided to children of victims who are meeting with Drop-In Center staff.

Who is Pu’uhonua for?

Victims of domestic violence are welcome at Pu’uhonua. Referrals may come from individuals, various community providers and the Honolulu Police Department. No appointment is necessary for the services provided at Pu’uhonua except for child care.

Pu’uhonua is free of charge.
